Percentages and fractions can be plural or singular. As in the last lesson, the verb you chose depends on whether you are talking about a total quantity or several units. There are several ways to know whether to use a singular or plural finish. I thought, „The remaining 1% are the mistakes that cause embarrassment?” Doesn`t 1 percent” need a singular verb? If the noun is used as a unit, use a singular verb. In each of your examples, the names act as units. For example, Metallica, as an entity, and not just some members of the band, are launching a new album. Therefore, the use is in all your examples. The use of plural abraction with collective nouns is a matter of the author`s intention (see Rule 9 of the subject-verb agreement). For subwords, we base ourselves on the noun of (see Rule 8 of the subject-verb agreement). The use of the plural pronoun in pop quiz question #2 forces the collective noun team to be considered plural. I receive your newsletter and I appreciate and I always learn from your very clear and concise explanations of the grammatical rules. In the case of a group of doctors who travel. In the previous rules you mentioned, a collective noun followed by a plural preposition object, in different cases, accepts a plural verblage. Shouldn`t he „a group of doctors go to Haiti?” As mentioned in Rule 9 of the subject-verb agreement, a collective subject, such as businesses, can accept a singular or plural verb depending on the author`s intent. Since the author has chosen to undertake as „those who” clarify, it seems that your friend prefers a plural interpretation. The sentence could be reworded to avoid the question of substantive collective concordance: some collective nouns may accept either a singular verb or a plural verb, depending on their use in the sentence. Collective names can be difficult, as it is up to the author of the sentence to determine whether the name acts as an entity or whether the whole indicates more individuality.
In your first example, „India has a team of players who are engaged”,” the team of players with individuality acts within the unit. Boston is the favorite in the playoffs. The cardinal is at the NCAA tournament. But some proper nouns, which are plural, adopt a singular verb: Brooks Brothers holds a sale. PLURAL IN FORM: Some words that are in the plural form become collective nouns and accept singular obstruction if the group or quantity is considered a unit. Right: a thousand bushels, this is a good yield. (One unit.) Right: A thousand bushels have been created….
